Tents for Vanagons, Eurovans, and Sharans (post 1980)

(Check out earlier tents, too. Some of the Breadloaf-style tents were still in use at least as late as the Vanagon period.)

Originally, I hadn't paid much attention to anything after the Breadloaf era. Just to make me feel guilty, Rick Gordon wrote:

you don't have my tent in here! I bought mine from an Austrian on his way to Ecuador (no kidding - he was a geography student). It's made for the Vanagon. I haven't found any label on it, he says he bought it in Germany. He had a mid-80's Vanagon that he had already sold. Description: no floor, aluminum frame, netting and canvas. Peaked roof. It's yellow I think (I bought it last fall and haven't had a chance to use it yet so I only looked at it once!) It will supposedly stand alone, and I think even has a zip down door on the Van side for this purpose (but I'm not sure right now)."

Westfalia

That's right, you can still buy a Westy tent new! The tent at right is a genuine Westfalia model. Ron "Coyote" Lussler has a great page describing his recent purchase of a brand-spankin' new Westy tent.

African Legends / B-WEST Outdoor Specialties / Action Africa

This South African outfit offers some nice looking if rather pricy tents. This is their "Sunseeker Kombi", designed to be used "as a free-standing five man tent or with a mini-van/microbus. The Kombi has a large rear awning for use as a garage and a rear door which aligns with the sliding door of the vehicle."

B-WEST's website seems to have vanished. In February 2000, Roger A. Miller (rmalan@pacifier.com) reported "B-West is no longer in business. However the former sales director, Paul Zway, started a similar company called Action Africa, Inc with mostly the same products. The website is http://www.actionafrica.com/index.html , and the e-mail address is info@actionafrica.com. . . . I e-mailed them and asked if they were the old B-West company and the reply was as stated above." I've not been able to confirm the URL, but thanks Roger!

Generic Vehicle Tents, Repair, Reconditioning, Supplies, etc.
  • Thanks to D. Axel Simmons for a lead to a source for repro Westy canvas: PLF VW in Washington state. Very well reputed on the Type II lists. Get their catalog!
  • See some of the nice vehicle tents sold by Jeff at ArkaTents.
  • Also, VW Canvas (site apparently down) sells awnings, poptop canvas, cots, and other gear. Folks on the Type2 list seem pleased with 'em.
  • VanBondo sez, check out this German Site.

Don't miss the new vintage-style tents shown elsewhere on this site, too.

These tent pages are © Joe Clark, 1994-2000. (If you make any money off this stuff, I want some of it. Baby needs repro parts.)
